Eco Friendly Burial Caskets and Vaults used for eco friendly burials are made from materials which are as biodegradable as possible, renewable and often recycled. Apart from allowing the body to decompose naturally with as minimum effect on the environment as possible, even the manufacture of these caskets and vaults is much more environmentally friendly.

The majority of caskets which are used for burial are not readily biodegradable. It has been estimated that around 80-85% of the caskets used in North America during 2006 were actually stamped steel, others were solid wood, veneer covered chipboard or made from other materials such as fiberglass. Made from sustainable materials they’re much cheaper and don’t involve the use of harmful glues or extensive manufacturing techniques which can use lots of energy itself. A simple shroud made of cotton is another option for you to think about.

Eco Friendly Burial Vaults are another area of the whole process which involves lots of energy and potential harm to the environment. I mean, sinking a steel or concrete vault into the ground is not environmentally friendly is it, never mind the actual process of producing the vaults and transporting them to the cemetery. Just for an example, in the United States the manufacture of a vault needs the production of an enormous amount of reinforced concrete, 1.6 tons. These vaults are now prohibited in Council-certified conservation cemeteries and low impact or natural burial grounds.

Memorial plaques and headstones are also pretty environmentally “unfriendly” don’t you think. What better way to remember a loved one than by planting a tree, or a bush, a living memorial which not only celebrates the life of the person, but helps to create an environmentally friendly habitat.

Eco Friendly Burials do not need a vault or liner, in fact, the body is buried in a shallow grave to assist with the decomposition, allowing some aerobic activity.
