Whenever we lose someone who we dearly loved, we find it difficult to imagine life going on without them. How will we ever manage? How will we ever make it through the day again?

We might not realize it, but there are many emotions which are recognized as the normal stages of grieving – if you don’t experience all of these steps that’s completely normal – we are all different people, but it sometimes helps to know that there is a grieving process which you will pass through, and though you’ll never forget your loved one, you will, in time, learn how to go on without them, however painful that thought might be.

The 10 Stages of Grieving

  1. Survive one hour at a time – don’t look too far ahead, just concentrate on dealing with your grief for the next hour.
  2. Survive one day at a time – ok, you’ve managed to survive for a few hours, now extend the grieving process to dealing with just one day at a time.
  3. Take care of yourself – you might find it difficult to eat and sleep during this time, but it really is important that you take proper care of yourself. Remember to eat properly, get enough rest and don’t be tempted to drink too much alcohol or smoke.
  4. Have faith – even if you’re not a deeply religious person, you might find comforting in saying a prayer or two, it really can help.
  5. Keep yourself busy – don’t just sit around moping all day. Find something constructive to do, keep yourself busy busy busy.
  6. Write a journal – you might be surprised how much writing things down can help you to cope.
  7. Be positive – this might sound difficult, but you might find that simply joining a yoga, meditation or exercise group can really help you to be more positive about life.
  8. Allow yourself to grieve – grieving is natural, and you must give yourself permission to grieve in your own way, regardless of what other people may expect of you.
  9. Survive one day at a time – go back to step two, take each day as it comes and you will get stronger.
  10. Connect with others – by connecting with others who need your help you can really begin to make sense of your life again, by enriching the lives of others.
