Burial Insurance Companies
Over the last thirty years or so, more and more Americans have begun to pre-plan for their funerals, or at least for their funeral expenses with burial life insurance companies. Let’s face it, this is good thinking, after all, why should you passing away leave your family and loved ones in mountains of debt–that’s not a very nice way to be remembered is it?
So how do you know which burial insurance companies are the best?
Choosing Burial Life Insurance Companies
Unfortunately, as with many other things, the increased interest in burial insurance soon coincided with unscrupulous people trying to make a quick buck out of the vulnerable. There are increasing reports about burial insurance scams, where the sick or the elderly have been duped into signing for policies from which they will never have a hope of reaping the benefits of – after all, burial insurance doesn’t cover the possibility of “if” something happens, there’s nothing surer than it will happen to all of us, the only question is “when”.
So how can you be sure that the burial life insurance companies you choose are the “real deal”?
Burial insurance policies are sold not only by insurance companies, but in some cases, by the funeral homes themselves.
By pre-paying for your funeral with a funeral home it will cut out any indecision when the time comes, it will save your family from having to make any arrangements (they will already be sorted out well in advance), but it is important that you let your family know the details, so that they don’t end up doing the whole thing again. This is one option which you can take, but before you sign anything or hand over any of your hard earned cash you may need to check out the small print:
- What happens if the funeral home goes out of business before you need them?
- What happens if you move to another location, is the policy transferable?
- What happens if you simply change your mind and decide on another cemetery/chapel/service?
All of these things can and do happen, so make sure that they don’t happen to you until you know all of the answers.
Burial Insurance Companies
I’ve already said that there has been a massive increase in the number of burial insurance scams, which has lead to many states really tightening up the laws, there is evidence that some states are even trying to outlaw them completely. How can you be really sure that you’re going to get what you pay for? After all, you won’t exactly be around to argue the point will you, it’ll be down to your poor, unfortunate relatives and loved ones.
One of the best ways to safeguard yourself is to use a recognized insurance broker. If you choose reputable burial life insurance companies they will only deal with the reputable burial companies, so at least you know that they are not just going to disappear over night.
You can also get burial life insurance quotes online. Take a look around and see what you can find. You might be surprised at the differences in prices if you shop around a little, look upon it as any other money saving shopping exercise and make sure that you get the best deal possible.
