To be (there) or not to be (there), that is the question . . . (Sorry, sometimes in such emotions situations a little humor can help)

Funeral web casts are becoming more and more popular at funerals up and down the country. Strange I hear you think, (I’m clever like that), but hang on, wait just a minute and think about it rationally.

There are very few occasions these days when extended families get together – Christmas (to some degree), family weddings, christenings maybe, and what do all of these things have in common, apart from Uncles doing some dodgy dancing? They’re all planned well in advance giving everyone plenty of notice to make their travel and accommodation arrangements. The other occasion when we all gather together is for a slightly less enjoyable event – a funeral. How much notice do you generally have for those? Well, some religions like to get the whole thing over and done with very quickly, for example, Jewish funerals must be arranged within a couple of days of the death. That doesn’t leave much time to get everybody together does it? I mean, America is a big place, and although air travel and such-like has made it possible to get long distances in a short period of time, it still doesn’t allow much time for cousin Vinny who moved from Ohio to Arizona for the love of a woman, or to Great Aunt Flo who retired in the Everglades does it.

Funeral Webcasts are one terrific answer. It just goes to show how technology and progress really can help to bring people together. More and more enterprising funeral directors have cottoned on to it and are offering this service (sometimes it’s even free). All that’s needed is the correct software, computer, tripod and a video camera, then people from across the world can literally feel a part of the proceedings and grieve along with the rest of the family, paying their respects to the deceased. Although they might not be there in body, and are unable to partake of the sandwiches after the event, at least they can feel that they are present in spirit, and that can make a big difference to many people.

If your family is spread across the four corners of the country, or even the world, then it’s certainly worth asking the question about whether this option is available, and then people who are unable to travel to the funeral but still want to take part in the process can simply view the whole proceedings on their computers.
